Chartreuse is a liqueur from France made by the Carthusian monks. Chartreuse has been made here since the 1740s from a secret recipe that they obtained in 1605 and was considered an ancient recipe at the time. It is made from distilled alcohol combined with 130 herbal extracts during aging. The liqueur is named after the monks' "La Grande Chartreuse" monastery, located in the Chartreuse Mountains in the Grenoble area of ​​France. The liqueur is produced in a factory in the nearby town of Voiron (Isère). Chartreuse is one of the rare liqueurs that continues to improve in the bottle with age if stored properly.
