Springbank Single Malt is a 10-year-old that is distilled two and a half times. This process is quite unique: during distillation, a portion is drawn off and added back for the next distillation. This means that one part is distilled twice, and another part three times. The spirit is then matured in bourbon and sherry casks, although Springbank also experiments with rum casks.
Longrow Single Malt is a heavy, peaty whisky with a high phenol content. The Longrow 10-year-old was matured in sherry or bourbon casks. Additionally, there was an experimental version matured in Tokaj casks, which, incidentally, is sometimes characterized by more conservative Longrow drinkers as an insult to the brand. Currently, a NAS (Non Age Statement) and an 18-year-old version are available. Springbank also releases an 11-year-old bottling that was matured in port casks. Hazelburn Single Malt is the youngest variant, which was only distilled for the first time in 1997. The Hazelburn was bottled and released as a 10-year-old in 2007. There was a small run of the 8-year-old, but that is very rare. In the meantime, a 12-year-old version has also appeared. Hazelburn is triple distilled and is not dried with peat.
Springbank is the only remaining Scottish distillery that carries out all steps in the whisky-making process on its own premises. Moreover, it is one of the few remaining privately owned distilleries. For this reason, whiskies from these distilleries are not widely used in blended whiskies, as the large conglomerates prefer to use single malts from their own organization. Springbank does, however, produce two blends itself: a 5-year-old Campbeltown Loch and Mitchell's 12-year-old.
Springbank 10 Years Single Malt is ideal for both the novice and the seasoned whisky drinker. The maturation in bourbon and sherry casks creates a pleasant balance in the taste. On the nose, fruit with a hint of peat, vanilla, and malt. On the palate, malt, oak, spices, nutmeg, cinnamon, and vanilla.
