Founded in 1692, Taylor’s is one of the oldest port houses in the Douro Valley. An independent family business, it focuses exclusively on the production
of port and is considered the global benchmark for vintage ports.
Originating from the steeply-sloped Quintas Vargellas, Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova, and Eira
Velha, these vintage ports are distinguished by their elegance and balance
as well as their power and longevity. Taylor’s also boasts substantial
reserves of oak-aged port, from which beautiful old tawnies are created,
including the legendary Single Vintage Tawny from 1863. Last but not least,
Taylor’s was the creator of the ever-successful Late Bottled Vintage and remains
the leading producer of that port style to this day.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: A climate with warm summers and cold
winters. The terroir features elements of weathered granite and
slate. VINIFICATION: After the intensive maceration period, fermentation begins. When the alcohol reaches approximately 8%, the process is stopped by adding wine alcohol, and the wine matures for an average of 20 years in oak barrels.
GRAPES: Touriga Francesa, Tinta Roriz, Touriga Nacional
ALCOHOL PERCENTAGE: 20.00%
NOTE & TASTE: Complex, nutty aroma, spicy, and jammy with hints of orange blossom and oak. Very rich and concentrated flavor with a long, smooth finish.
SERVING SUGGESTION: An excellent accompaniment to many desserts. Beautiful with figs, almonds, and caramel crème brûlée. Also delicious with a plate of wild strawberries, walnuts, or dried fruit.
TIP: Old tawnies are aged in port pipes. These are old wooden barrels of 550-600 liters.
