In 2022, importer Bresser & Timmer sent a special cask to the Kilchoman Distillery on Islay: an ex-Weinhaus Franz Hahn Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) cask. This cask was filled with a Kilchoman single malt, distilled on December 19, 2016. After 9 years of maturation, this whisky was selected for bottling under the Specialist’s Choice label.
The influence of the Spätburgunder cask creates an interesting combination of the characteristic Kilchoman character with notes of red fruit and added layers to the flavour profile. The whisky is bottled at 56% alc.
Nose: Peaty smoke with hints of blackberry and blackcurrant
Taste: Peat, ripe fruit, brioche, marzipan and a light fennel/anise note
Finish: Long and persistent, with fruit notes becoming increasingly prominent
