A distinctive Speyside single malt from the Scottish distillery The Balvenie, where traditional craftsmanship and a rich whisky heritage converge. The 1931 Collection draws inspiration from an exceptional whisky distilled in 1931 that matured for no less than 88 years in a European sherry cask. This historic bottling inspired a collection that highlights The Balvenie’s traditional production methods.
This 12-year-old expression is crafted using 100% barley malted on the distillery's own traditional malting floor. Following initial maturation in American oak casks, the whisky undergoes a finishing period in European oak sherry casks from Jerez, Spain. This combination creates a beautiful interplay between The Balvenie’s signature honeyed sweetness, creamy toffee, dried fruit, and warm spices. Bottled at 47.5% ABV, this is a rich, characterful single malt offering a refined balance of sweetness, spice, and oak influence.
Tasting Note
On the nose, the whisky opens with warm aromas of freshly baked biscuits, honey, and creamy toffee. Soft notes of vanilla and sweet malt are complemented by a subtle hint of ginger and aromatic oak. Light nuances of raisins and sherry emerge in the background, adding depth and an inviting, warm character.
On the palate, the whisky is full-bodied and smooth, with a velvety texture. Sweet malt and liquid honey form the foundation, followed by creamy caramel and toffee. Next, notes of candied ginger, ripe raisins, and other dried fruits emerge. The influence of European sherry casks adds rich fruitiness and pleasant spiciness, while the oak provides structure and a subtle drying note. Despite its full flavor, the whisky remains beautifully balanced, possessing the signature elegance of The Balvenie.
The finish is long, warm, and velvety smooth. Honey and sweet malt linger pleasantly, followed by notes of raisins, gentle ginger, and spicy oak. A slight dryness in the final moments provides a lovely counterpoint to the enduring sweetness of toffee and caramel.
