On January 15th, 89 breweries gathered at Poesiat & Kater in Amsterdam for this year's "Beer Geeks Beat ALS" brew day. The style was determined based on a vote on the Beer Geeks Facebook page. The "Geeks" chose an Imperial Stout. Subsequently, several brewers brainstormed further ideas for the beer. The brewing team ultimately chose an Imperial Stout with rosemary and sea salt, with an ABV of approximately 12%.
During the brew day, Ferry Wijnhoven, founder of Beer Geeks, presented the beer's name. Johnny Cleven of Implosion Brewing suggested "Beyond the Horizon" during an earlier brainstorming session. The reasoning behind the name is both striking and beautiful; Right now, ALS is still a death sentence. But eventually, it could be turned into a treatable disease. The ALS Foundation is incredibly far along in the process of developing a cure. So that horizon seems distant, but it's getting closer, and beyond that, we have the cure.
