Iconic winemaker Angelo Gaja (born 1940) single-handedly put Piedmont on the
international wine map. Besides vineyards in Piedmont, Gaja also owns
vineyards in Tuscany, including Ca’Marcanda in Bolgheri. In 1996, Gaja
bought Ca’Marcanda (60 hectares) and gave it its current name, a reference to the
endless series of negotiations he conducted to acquire the estate. He uprooted a large portion of the Sangiovese vines and replanted them
with French varietals such as Merlot, Cabernet, and Syrah. Gaja's Super Tuscan
was born! Promis is the young-vine wine from Ca’Marcanda, and
Magari is the wine with greater potential. The estate's flagship wine is
Camarcanda. Vistamare is a distinctive white wine made from Vermentino and
Viognier.
