In the far northwest of Saint-Émilion, on the plateau that forms the
shared border with Pomerol, lies Château Tour Chantecaille, 300 meters from Château Pétrus and
between Château Evangile and Gazin. Here, the
Angle family runs their 9-hectare
estate from their 19th-century manor house. Most of it is planted with—how could it be otherwise—Merlot; only 2 hectares are reserved for Cabernet Franc. The vines are
planted in a one- to two-meter-thick layer of sand mixed with stones, on a
subsoil of stony clay. These are ideal conditions, as they are for
some of the top châteaux in Pomerol.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: A maritime climate with (currently) often
warm summers and mild winters. The weather can be unpredictable. The soil
consists of clay and slate. VINIFICATION: The hand-harvested grapes are fermented in concrete vats. The wine then matures for 12 months in oak barrels, a third of which are replaced each year by three different barrel makers.
GRAPES: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
ALCOHOL: 14.00%
NOTE: Elegant oak-aged Saint-Émilion with seductive aromas of spices, red and dark fruit, and a full, rounded palate with supple tannins and a rich, harmonious finish.
SERVING SUGGESTION: Delicious with roast quail, veal with mushroom sauce, pork tenderloin with garlic and green herbs, game birds, and mature cheeses.
