Jamaican distillery Hampden Estate introduces its oldest official bottling to date with Hampden Estate Pure Jamaican Rum 15 YO. This fifteen-year-old rum from Trelawny Parish showcases the convergence of traditional production and full tropical maturation. For lovers of characterful Jamaican rum, this is a significant addition to the premium segment. Only 24 bottles will initially be available for the Dutch market.

Historic Base in Trelawny
Hampden Estate has been producing rum in northwestern Jamaica since 1753. The distillery still uses copper pot stills and follows a fundamentally unchanged method. This consistent approach has secured Hampden a firm position in the traditional Jamaican rum segment.

The distillery is characterized by its focus on rums with a high ester profile. These aromatic components develop during fermentation and are a key component of Hampden's distinctive character. By adhering to this method, the style remains consistent over the years.

Fermentation as the Defining Phase
Production begins with locally sourced molasses. Hampden ferments this in open-top wooden vats using wild yeasts, dunder, and traditional fermentation agents. This process takes several days and creates the esters responsible for the fruity and spicy notes.

Following fermentation, distillation takes place in copper pot stills with a double retort. This method produces a powerful and aromatic distillate. Compared to column distillation, more flavor is retained, which is clearly reflected in the final product.

Tasting Notes
The Hampden Estate 15 YO rum reveals ripe tropical fruit, orange peel, and dried fruit on the nose, complemented by nutty notes and light smoky hints. The palate is full-bodied and slightly oily, with mango, guava, candied ginger, and cocoa.

The finish is long-lasting, developing spicy and slightly medicinal notes that suit this style. The rum is bottled at 50% ABV, without chill filtration, and without added sugars or colorants. This preserves the full character of the distillate.
