The Torabhaig distillery is the second distillery on the Isle of Skye. It was built on the former farm of the same name, which dates back to around 1760, while the accompanying township was built around 1820. Plans for a new distillery, the first on Skye since the founding of Talisker in 1830, were approved in 2002. This plan originated with Sir Iain Noble. Due to circumstances, including his death in 2010, it took until 2014 for construction to begin. In 2013, the license was acquired by Mossburn Distillers. Construction was completed in 2016, and the first spirit flowed from the stills in January 2017. The malt for Torabhaig is heavily peated (75 ppm), but the shape of the stills and the distillation method result in a less smoky spirit than one might expect. Torabhaig boasts eight Douglas fir washbacks, each holding 8,000 liters. The stainless steel semi-lauter mash tun has a capacity of one and a half tons. The stills were built by Forsyths of Rothes. The wash still (named Sir Iain) has a capacity of 8,000 liters and distills the spirit to a strength of 26% ABV. The 5,000 liter spirit still (named Lady Noble) distills the spirit to a strength of 69% ABV. Various types of casks are used for maturation, including casks custom-made for the distillery. The visitor center opened in March 2018. The distillery has an annual capacity of 500,000 liters of pure alcohol.
Tasting Notes
Expect a layered smoke with salty breezes and sweet oak spices, with notes of tobacco, orange-barleysugar, and a hint of seaweed. Powerful yet refined, with smoldering campfire smoke, vanilla, and white pepper, it finishes long and warm with the distinct coastal character of Skye. (Torabhaig)
