The 1982 vintage was one of the first I discovered when I took over as Cellar Master in 2018. I selected it for the Hors-Série collection after tasting it simultaneously with its period-aged and mature wines. It was exquisite in both cases, beautifully expressing the Piper-Heidsieck style.
For this second edition of the Hors-Série collection, I wanted to show how different aging styles enrich the vintage's personality, the effects of the passage of time on the wine, by pairing the Hors-Série 1982 with the Brut Sauvage 1982. – Émilien Boutillat, Piper-Heidsieck Champagne Cellar Master.
Émilien Boutillat is the spokesperson for Piper-Heidsieck's oenological and viticultural expertise. It highlights the diversity of the terroirs, the men, their gestures, and their expertise over several generations, to tell the story. and to create, preserve, and pass on the House's treasures. The Hors-Série collection, unveiled in 2021, gives the Cellar Master carte blanche to pass on and enrich the Piper-Heidsieck heritage. Émilien Boutillat highlights the creativity and boldness of this wine and demonstrates both its longevity and modernity in the excellence of his champagnes. Each Hors-Série cuvée is released in very limited editions and is distinguished by its own unique character, whether it be the aging time in the cellar, the special blend, or the tasting ritual.

A bountiful harvest: 1982 was a prosperous year, both in terms of quality and quantity. The mild weather encouraged the vines to flower harmoniously in the spring. During the hot and dry summer, the grapes grew optimally. Favorable rains facilitated the final ripening phase. After two years of poor harvests, the harvest, which took place on September 17th, 1982 began generously. The vintage, intended to be fiery and promising, has indeed become historic in structure, elegance, and finesse.
