Within Simonsig's wide range, there's a favorite for every wine lover and
every budget. Frans Malan's pioneering spirit has been praised many times; he launched the first Vonkelwijn in 1971 and was one of the
first South African winemakers to experiment with Chardonnay and
invest in modern cellar techniques. He also played a pioneering role in the
revival of authentic Chenin Blanc. Today, Frans'
sons, Francois and Johan, still play a crucial role in the winery as active
members of the Board of Directors. They are supported by their children:
Christelle works as financial manager and Michael is the cellar master of the
South African winery. Simonsig cultivates a variety
of grape varieties on more than 200 hectares, producing both varietal wines and intriguing
blends, such as the red Cape blend with a prominent role for Pinotage and a white
Rhône blend.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: Maritime climate with relatively dry, warm summers
and mild winters. The red-colored soil is rich in clay and
minerals.
WINIFICATION: The hand-harvested grapes are gently pressed
and the juice is fermented at a low temperature in stainless steel
tanks. The second fermentation in the bottle lasts for at least 15
months, resulting in a fine mousse.
GRAPES: Pinot Noir (74%), Pinotage (23%), Pinot Meunier (3%)
ALCOHOL: 12.00%
NOIS & TASTE: Bright salmon pink with aromas of fresh
raspberries and cranberries. The palate is fresh and elegant with white
peach, strawberry sorbet, a hint of biscuit, refined acidity, and a
long, juicy finish. SERVING SUGGESTION: Serve as an aperitif, but also with
shellfish, especially lobster, smoked salmon, sushi, sweet and sour
dishes, or salads with an exotic touch. And try a
light dessert with fresh red fruit.
FACT: The Kaapse Vonkel Rosé Brut was created by Johan
Malan in 2004. Its innovative feature was the South African touch:
the addition of Pinotage to Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier.
