Founded in 1692, Taylor’s is one of the oldest port houses in the Douro Valley. An independent family business, it focuses exclusively on the production
of port and is considered the global benchmark for vintage ports.
Originating from the steeply-sloped Quintas Vargellas, Terra Feita, Junco, Casa Nova, and Eira
Velha, these vintage ports are distinguished by their elegance and balance
as well as their power and longevity. Taylor’s also boasts substantial
reserves of oak-aged port, from which beautiful old tawnies are created,
including the legendary Single Vintage Tawny from 1863. Last but not least,
Taylor’s was the creator of the ever-successful Late Bottled Vintage and remains
the leading producer of that port style to this day.
CLIMATE & TERROIR: A climate with warm summers and cold
winters. The terroir features elements of slate and schist. VINIFICATION: Taylor’s has one of the most extensive reserves
of very old barrel-aged port. Since 2014, Taylor’s has been releasing a limited
release of Single Harvest Port, harvested 50 years earlier.
The 1976 is the tenth in the series.
GRAPES: Touriga Francesa, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz
ALCOHOL: 20.00%
NOISE & TASTE: Rich aromas of gingerbread, honeysuckle,
orange, marzipan, and soft caramel, followed by an explosion of
rum and raisins, citrus fruits, guava, a hint of grilled pineapple
and delicate butterscotch and honey notes on the palate.
SERVING SUGGESTION: Serve at 10-14°C. Excellent
pairing with various desserts featuring figs, almonds, or caramel. Also perfect with crème brûlée or fresh strawberries. The wine can also be enjoyed on its own as a finishing touch to a good meal.
FACT: 1976 was an exceptionally dry year in the Douro.
As a result, the grapes are very concentrated. Due to the drought,
the yield was very limited.
