Tasting Note
Aroma
Explosively sherry-rich with raisins, figs, and dark cherries, followed by candied orange peel and plum compote. Then walnut, marzipan, and cocoa powder, with a spicy edge of cinnamon and clove. Beneath that rich layer, a tight, malty base remains visible, with a hint of beeswax and a light mineral note. With a few drops of water, it opens up more broadly, and the fruit becomes fresher and more layered.
Taste
Full-bodied and oily, clearly cask strength. Dark fruit, toffee, and dark chocolate open, followed by structure: spicy oak, black pepper, and a firm, slightly tannic sherry grip. In the mid-palate, malt biscuit, nutty notes, and a touch of espresso bitterness appear, preventing the sweetness from becoming sticky. Water can help nicely here to bring out more orange, nuts, and a creamier mouthfeel.
Finish
Long and powerful with persistent sherry notes, cocoa, and spicy oak. Drier towards the finish with tea-like tannins, orange peel, and a warm, peppery glow that lingers for a long time. Teaninich Distillery is located near the village of Alness in the Scottish Highlands, not far from the Cromarty Firth. Founded in 1817 by Captain Hugh Munro, Teaninich is one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland and has a long history of whisky production. A unique feature of Teaninich is the use of a special filtration technique, the mash filter, instead of the traditional mash tun. This contributes to the clarity and purity of the whisky. The distillery uses water from the nearby Alness River. The whiskies mature primarily in ex-bourbon casks, ensuring a well-balanced and rich flavour. Teaninich is a major supplier of malt whisky for blended whiskies, but also produces excellent single malts. This combination of tradition, innovation, and high-quality production makes Teaninich beloved by connoisseurs.
