TORABHAIG – THE DISTILLERS’ SERIES – IONA’S FIRST EDITION – Isle of Skye Single Malt Scotch Whisky

With "Iona’s First Edition," the Torabhaig distillery on the Scottish Isle of Skye presents a unique, limited-edition single malt that highlights chocolate and malt. This inaugural release in "The Distillers’ Series" was developed by distiller Iona Macphie, who infused the production process with her own personal taste and creativity. Her inspiration stemmed from the discovery of "chocolate malt"—a distinctive type of malt known for its rich, slightly bitter character.

The whisky is crafted using peated malt and incorporates 10% chocolate malt as a special ingredient. A long fermentation period, combined with a distillation approach designed to retain exceptionally rich flavors, contributes to the whisky’s distinct profile. Maturation in first-fill bourbon casks and refill sherry casks imparts a complex interplay of vanilla, chocolate, fruit, and spicy oak notes. Bottled at a cask strength of 60.9% ABV—without chill-filtration or added coloring—this is a bold, distinctive whisky that reveals a different side of Torabhaig.

Tasting Note

- Nose: Soft vanilla and creamy cocoa butter create an initial impression, followed by dark chocolate, malt, and roasted, coffee-like notes. Fresh citrus and subtle tropical fruit aromas add vibrancy, balancing the rich, dark scents.

- Palate: Powerful and warming, featuring notes of clove and a crisp hint of peppermint. Next, sweet notes of caramel and toffee emerge, combined with red berries, raisins, and toasted oak. Ginger and warm spices add extra depth to the whisky, while the chocolate malt provides a rich, slightly bitter accent.

- Finish: Long and pronounced, with lingering notes of ginger, black pepper, and cinnamon. The spiciness is gradually softened by vanilla, while the dark chocolate notes and toasted malt leave a pleasant, warming impression.
