Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated
A limited release as part of The Glasgow Distillery’s Small Batch Series; their ongoing series of bottlings that showcase the versatility of whisky produced at this modern, urban distillery. The Small Batch Series showcases their three whisky styles; peated, unpeated and triple distilled single malts with a wide range of new and exciting cask maturations.
The Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated release is a six year old bottling, created by combining five casks, two of which contained their peated single malt and three of which contained their unpeated single malt. The whisky in these casks has spent over three years in a first fill ex-bourbon cask, before a lengthy finishing period of three years and four months in French cognac casks.
Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated mood shot 1
Cognac is a French brandy made from grapes and distilled twice in copper pot stills, after which the whisky is aged in oak casks for a minimum of two years. The cognac influence brings notes of fresh fruit, caramel, toffee and a light nutty flavour to the Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated bottling.
The Glasgow Distillery originally used cognac casks in 2022 as part of their first ‘Small Batch Series’ release, giving their peated single malt, bottled at 56% ABV, a cognac finish. In 2023, the distillery released a Triple Distilled Cognac finish at 52% ABV. The Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated is the first time the distillery has presented a cognac-inspired release, combining both peated and unpeated whiskies.
Whisky 1770 Glasgow Cognac Cask Finish #2 Peated is a combination of five casks: 16/852, 16/853 and 17/806 contain unpeated single malt. 17/798 and 17/799 contain peated single malt. The spirit in each cask was matured for a minimum of 3 years in first fill ex-bourbon casks, followed by a long finish of 3 years and 4 months in cognac barrique casks. The pairing of these casks and subsequent bottling took place on 9th April 2024.
Bottled at 58% ABV with 2250 bottles available, this is a complex and distinctively fruity release with a balance of sweet smoke and rich vanilla. The bourbon influence adds layers of honeycomb, rich honey and vanilla ice cream, while the cognac adds dark fruit elements, a light floral note and large amounts of poached pear and dried apples.
