Portrait: What Makes Kilkerran 16 Year Old Special
If there were such a thing as underground whisky in Campbeltown, Kilkerran would be the secret headliner. It's produced at the Glengyle Distillery, which—warning—should not be confused with Glenlivet, Glenfarclas, or any other glen. Glengyle is small, independent, proud—and part of the Springbank family. So, it's like the little cousin who always arrives a little later to parties but then wins everyone over with his character.
The Kilkerran 16 Year Old is the distillery's mature flagship. No marketing gimmicks, no big show—just an honest single malt with backbone. And honestly: Anyone who can sit around in Campbeltown for 16 years without giving up has earned its place on the shelf anyway.
The Glengyle Distillery, by the way, was founded in 1872, then took a break for over 80 years (sure, it happens sometimes), and was only revived in 2004 – by the same whisky enthusiasts who also run Springbank. So much for reliability.
And why Kilkerran and not Glengyle? Quite simply: The name "Glengyle" was already trademarked. So the whisky was named after "Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain," the Gaelic name for the town of Campbeltown. Sounds complicated? That's exactly why it's called Kilkerran.
If you like whisky with provenance, attitude, and a touch of stubbornness, this is the perfect choice. Kilkerran 16 Year Old isn't a loudspeaker – but it's a whisperer with depth.
Campbeltown through and through – and finally, a teenager who doesn't cause trouble.
