William Mitchell, a farmer from Campbeltown, built his own distillery in 1872 following a dispute with his brother. He named the distillery Glengyle. He already had experience as a whisky distiller through his collaboration with his brother John; together they owned the Springbank distillery. In 1919, he sold the distillery to Highland Distillers Ltd., who closed the distillery due to the deteriorating economy, and the last stocks were sold on April 8, 1925. In 1940, the remaining buildings were leased to the Campbeltown Miniature Rifle Club, which installed a shooting range there. The name Kilkerran comes from the Gaelic “Ceann Loch Cille Chiarain” and means the place where the monks of Saint Kieran, originally from Ireland, had settled in Campbeltown. In 1957, Campell Henderson Ltd. made an attempt to reopen the distillery, which unfortunately failed. In 1979, the distillery was dismantled and the building became the sales office of the Kintyre Farmers Cooperative. One of the warehouses was even converted into a garage. 75 years after the last production of spirit at the Glengyle distillery, the new Mitchell’s Glengyle Limited was founded in November 2000 by Mr. Hedley Wright. The intention was to start a completely renewed Glengyle Distillery. Hedley Wright is the great-grandson of William Mitchell, the founder of the Glengyle distillery and also a director of J&A Mitchell & Co Ltd., the owners of the Springbank distillery. Renovation and fitting out of the distillery began in February 2001. Stills in excellent condition were purchased from Ben Wyves. The technical installations were installed in May 2003. In January 2004, the larch wood washbacks (30,000 liters capacity each) were installed, and the millroom was also completed. In May 2004, the first new make spirit was put into a cask. As of January 2013, all Glengyle activity was legally separated from Springbank and incorporated into the newly established firm Mitchell’s Glengyle Ltd.

Tasting note
Colour: dark gold. Nose: aromas of citrus fruit, honeycomb, wholemeal toast, charcoal-grilled seafood, smoked bacon. Taste: full smoky notes with hints of lemon biscuits, ham, and melon. The finish is beautifully balanced with peat smoke, lemon peel, powdered sugar, and a sweet, buttery mouthfeel.
